Book Review - Deception by Lee Nichols

Six weeks after Emma Vaile's parents, owners of an antiquities store, suddenly leave in a hurry for what appears to be a business-related trip, a growing sense of the unimaginable sets in when she can't reach them: her parents have vanished, the manager of their shop has quit, and her brother is in another country. She is all alone and having visions that she hasn't had since "The Incident" when she was seven years old. As if seeing people that aren't really there was bad enough, touching an ancient relic that recently arrived in her parents' shop has Emma dizzyingly whisked away into visions of the past - someone else's past. The police are about to place her in a foster home when her brother's old college friend, Bennett, produces papers stating that Emma's parents gave him legal guardianship before they left. It is here that she discovers her true identity and her family's relationship to the paranormal realm. The first book in the Haunting Emma trilogy, Lee Nichol's debut YA novel is a refreshing change from the popularity of supernatural thrillers focused on vampires, werewolves, and zombies. It is a quick, light read with plenty of secrets to keep you curious and a surprise ending that leaves you wondering about the rest of the story that has yet to be told.

October Teen Lock-In

We'll be hosting our Fall Teen Lock-In on Friday, October 21st from 6:30-10:30PM. Along with our regular activities of gaming, crafts and a scavenger hunt, we'll also be having a special "MAPL Project Runway" event during our lock-in.

Registration and a permission slip are required to attend this event. Registration is available on our website@ http://www.matawanaberdeenlibrary.com/ .

Iron Chef MAPL!

At our Lock-In on Friday, August 5th, we incorporated an Iron Chef portion of the evening. All of the teens that attended the lock-in were given the choice of participating and we had 13 teen chefs. The "pantry" consisted of rice crispie treats, twizzlers, maraschino cherries, sugar cones, fluff, colored goldfish crackers, sprinkles, and a few other things. The "secret ingredient" which every chef was required to use, was graham crackers. Each chef made 6 portions so that there could be taste-testing and voting. We had 3 top winners!

Candy Olympics!

On Monday, July 18th we had Candy Olympics! We went fishing for swedish fish, did gumball relays, sorted M&M's by their color, and played several rounds of CANDY (BINGO but with the names of different kinds of candy.) A fun time was had by all- and there were even some prizes in the end!

On Wednesday, June 15th the furniture for the new Teen Place was installed thanks to the Friends of the Library! A reception to annouce the opening of our Teen Place will be held Tuesday, June 21st @ 6:30PM. All are welcome to attend. While the library will be open for the reception, there will be no computer access of circulation services. Check out the pictures below! But...it's even better in person!

Join us for our first Lock-In to kickoff summer reading with a scavenger hunt, crafts, ice cream sundaes, and gaming! This event is for teens entering grades 7-12.

Volunteer for the Summer!

We've been getting many inquiries about volunteering @ the library for the summer. This year's Volunteer Recruitment sessions will be held at the library on Wednesday, June 1st @ 5PM and Thursday, June 2nd @ 5PM. If you have never volunteered at the library before and are interested in doing so, please make your best effort to attend one of these meetings. We are looking for volunteers that can donate 2-3 hours of their time a week and be entering grades 7-12 in the fall.

If you cannot attend one of these meetings, but are interested in volunteering, please stop by the Children's room to see Miss Chrissie or Miss Linda the last week of May or the first week of June.

If you are a returning volunteer, keep your eyes peeled- we'll be sending out the volunteer paperwork in the mail sometime in the middle of May.

New Playaways!

We just added some new titles to the YA Playaway collection! If you haven't yet tried a playaway, I encourage you to do so. A playaway is an MP3 player that contains a recorded book and it is small enough to fit in your pocket. Unlike a Book on CD, you do not need a device to play the audiobook. The only thing you need for a playaway is a set of headphones to listen- we have them available at the circulation desk if you need a pair. My favorite part about playaways is that you can make the narrator talk slower or faster!

Teen Make a Gift

We'll be having the "Make a Gift" program again this year as part of the library's "Festival of Giving." It will be held on Sunday, December 5th from 1:30-3PM in the library meeting room. Teens attending will be making soup mix and cookie mix jars that will be donated to the Matawan Food Pantry.

Teen Volunteer Recruitment

The library is looking for teen volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks this summer.
